Sitting in Silence

Sitting in silence.

One thing you have to learn early on in audiobook narration (and I am still applying this) is being okay with sitting in silence.

You may think you need to flow from one sentence to the next. Keeping pace as you believe the listener will get bored or turn it off! I NEED TO AVOID BLOCKING!

But...

Just think for a second about how we tell stories in the real world. There are silences, there are umms and ahhs, and there are times we repeat words. Silences because our brains are trying to catch up with our mouths. It is naturally blocky.

Talking naturally doesn't mean, one pace, one way. It isn't perfect.

Try to embrace the silence at the ends of emotional sentences, sentences that you feel require that silence. We do this mostly alone so, it is up to you!

Rise and fall. Speech is not flat.
